At the SPCA de l'Outaouais, our goal is to have a fully bilingual Web site. Unfortunately, this is impossible at this point due to resource limitations. We apologize and want to assure you that our services are nonetheless equally available in both official languages.

Do not hesitate to call us at 243-2004 or visit our office at 132 De Varennes Street, Gatineau. We are open seven days a week, including Sundays (noon to 5 p.m.). To find out more, check the English version of our latest newsletter.

We offer the following services:

The Shelter

  • Stray animals are kept in the shelter in very sanitary conditions for a period of at least two (2) business day.
  • The animal control officers bring in stray animals between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. every weekday.
  • Animals delivered to the shelter by owners who do not wish to keep them are accepted at no cost (but a donation will be appreciated).
  • The shelter's new business hours are Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The shelter is now open to the public over lunch hour to allow as many visits as possible.

Emergency service
At the request of the police department and the city, an SPCA officer is available to respond to emergencies (dangerous or injured stray animals) outside of regular business hours, on weekends and on holidays. Emergencies should however be reported by dialing 911.

Inspection service
The SPCA retains the services of an inspector who is sworn in by the Justice department as a "special constable". All complaints of cruelty toward animals under the Criminal Code are investigated as soon as possible. The SPCA may be obligated to initiate proceedings or to act as a resource for the police service responsible of a case.

Quarantine Service
The SPCA offers a quarantine service for animals that bite or show symptoms of rabies. The veterinary medicine section of Agriculture Canada can also be contacted to retrieve and analyze the bodies of dead animals.

Euthanasia Service
The SPCA offers a professional and humane euthanasia service to owners who wish to euthanize their animals (certain fees apply).

Lost and Found Animals
The SPCA receives lost and found animals. It verifies case files each day in order to lacate an animal's owner. A bulletin board is made available for those who wish to post a notice about lost animals.

Adoption Service
The adoption service is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. as well as on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. An adoption counsellor is on-site to help potential owners choose the animal that will best suit them.

Animal Welfare Service
The SPCA is responsible for the care and initial treatment of any sick or injured animals delivered to the shelter. These animals are given first aid in necessary. The SPCA also uses the services of a veterinarian to treat seriously injured animals.

Education
Qualified personnel are available to advise visitors on the appropriate care of animals. Educational material is also available to help reduce the number of incidents of public nuisance caused by irresponsible animal owners. In addition, the SPCA can visit schools to increase awareness among students. Note that you can buy on site Musings/Mewsings, a book written by Barbara Florio Graham and her cat. We also encourage you to read her prize-winning article "Training a Cat like a Dog".
